Riverview Winery
Perched over the Lackawanna River in Jermyn, Riverview Winery provides both local sights and flavors. The big red barn housing the winery is also located adjacent to the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail and offers expansive outdoor seating. Guests may enjoy bottle service or tasting of the vintages made in house. Additional business on site include Dunmore Candy Kitchen, RiverView Ice Cream, Old Man John’s Apiary and Sugar Babies LTD. Riverview Winery is just four miles from Hotel Anthracite.
Capra Collina Winery
Winemaking for the Betti family has its roots in their ancestral home of Pantana, Italy. After the family settled in Jessup, PA the tradition continued. Today they craft wine the same way as their father and grandfather before them. Visitors to the winery on the Scranton-Carbondale Highway in Blakely can enjoy in-house wine tastings- five different vintages for $3- or take home a bottle to enjoy. Capra Collina offers a wide variety of sweet wines as well as dry whites and dry reds. Selections rotate but all meet the owners’ goal of offering artisanal wine at affordable prices. Case Quattro Winery
A desire to keep the memory of the family patriarch alive inspired the founding of Case Quatrro Winery. The Sebastianelli family originally hailed from the Italian village of Isola Fossara. Winemaking has been a family pastime for generations. With the winery on Main Street in Peckville, the Sebastianellis are able to keeps the tradition going among younger generations while sharing their heritage with the community at large. Live entertainment often accompanies tasting hours and the winery also hosts special events throughout the year. Case Quattro Winery is just over eight miles from Hotel Anthracite.
Maiolatesi Wine Cellars
One of the first family wineries in Lackawanna County, Maiolatesi Wine Cellars has grown considerably in its 20 years in existence. With the discovery of a wine press made by his great-grandfather, Sal Maiolatesi was inspired to dip his toe into the winemaking craft. His training as an electromechanical technician served him well in building his own modern winemaking equipment. Soon what started as a hobby blossomed into a thriving business. Today Maiolatesi Wine Cellars offers 30 varieties ranging from fruit-sweetened wines to delicately crafted dry wines. The winery sits on 36 picturesque acres in Scott Township. In addition to winemaking, the 10,000 square foot facility features a retail space that sells wine-related decor and gifts. A Tuscan-style tasting room boasts a handmade cherry-wood wine bar. Tastings are offered during regular business hours and can be accompanied by a charcuterie plate. On weekends, the winery offers a full restaurant menu featuring dishes such as gourmet mac and cheese, burgers and shrimp and grits. Maiolatesi Wine Cellars is located 10.5 miles from Hotel Anthracite.
Space Time Mead and Cider Works, Inc.
Dan Schreffler went way back to find his passion. Mead, made primarily from honey, is one of the oldest beverages around. The name of the urban microbrewery is a nod to the practice of applying modern technology in making a beverage that’s been around for hundreds of years. Like many others, Schreffler began as a home brewer. His hobby became a second career with the opening of a retail space on South Blakely Street in Dunmore. Innovation is the hallmark of the 40 varietals offered. Whenever possible, ingredients are sourced locally and utilize 100 percent wind energy to power the process. Visitors can enjoy tastings Thursday through Sunday. The wine list changes frequently and features many varieties of cider, dry and semi-dry mead, sweet and semi-sweet mead, special releases and grape wine. Center City Wine Cellar
City dwellers don’t have to go far to sample a wide variety of spirits. Center City Wine Cellar, located in the Marketplace at Steamtown in downtown Scranton, features the award-winning vintages of Pennsylvania’s Crossing Vineyard. Part wine bar, part retail outlet, visitors will find craft beer on tap from some of Northeast PA’s best breweries as well as flights of beer and wine to sample. Center City Wine Cellar is nearly 19 miles from Hotel Anthracite.
Lucchi Family Wine Cellars
Owner/vintner Robert Lucchi learned the craft of winemaking at the feet of his father. His parents left Bologna, Italy in the early 1900s and settled in West Scranton. Winemaking was very much a family tradition. In fact, in the 1970s Robert planted the vines that continue to produce multiple barrels of their Concord Estate Wine. Today Robert is joined by his son, Mark in the wine business. The winery on North Main Avenue in Scranton offers everything from Dry Reds to Sweet Blush Wines. Visitors may stop in for tastings Wednesday through Sunday or to purchase a bottle to take home. Lucchi Family Wine Cellars is 15 miles from Hotel Anthracite.
Talerico’s Tropical Winery
Outside this winery it’s small town Taylor, PA. Inside it’s a tropical escape. The colorful, relaxed décor creates an island vibe. Owner/vintner Jim Talerico is a self-professed Jimmy Buffet fanatic. His vintages feature names such as “Drunken Pirate” and “Jamaica Me Smile.” During warmer weather visitors can relax on the outdoor patio and order from the tiki bar. Talerico’s Tropical Winery is located on South Main Street in Taylor, 22.5 miles from Hotel Anthracite.
Wood Winery
Billed as, “fruit forward and food friendly, this family owned and operated winery in Madison Township specializes in small batches. Vintages feature grapes, apples and berries grown in Pennsylvania. Wines run the gamut from dry and oaky to sweet and fruity and sparkling and port style. In the tasting room visitors can sample an extensive wine list plus shop a selection of Wood Winery apparel, locally sourced cheese, honey, crackers, preserved goods, syrup and more. Wood Winery is located 20 miles from Hotel Anthracite.
Mucciolo Family Wines
Family-history is built into this winery on Main Street in Old Forge. Natalie Mucciolo Leatherman and her husband, Dale, operate out of a former general store opened by her great-grandparents, Mary and Antonio Lana. The storefront, which dates to 1929, features the original tin ceiling, plate glass windows, wooden wall shelves, ornamental sales counter and working cash register. The vintage setting provides a unique atmosphere to enjoy the winery’s selection of 20 wines and cider wines. There’s also a cocktail menu featuring house-made conceptions such as spiced rum, garlic-infused vodka or signature Bloody Marys. Visitors can also enjoy Pennsylvania craft brews as well as other regional and state-brewed beverages. Mucciolo Family Wines is 20 miles from Hotel Anthracite.
